Ammonia Leak Sends Meat Plant Workers to the Hospital
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 04/25/2018

Seventeen workers at a central Wisconsin meat processing plant were medically treated after a pipe filled with ammonia burst, causing gases to spread throughout the facility. Authorities say the incident happened at the Abbyland Foods plant in Abbotsford on Monday evening.

According to reports, the spill was discovered just after 7:00 p.m., which prompted an evacuation of the entire factory. Firefighters and EMT responders then asked local residents who lived within a mile of the site to leave their homes immediately. The problem was quickly fixed and the evacuation was called off by 9:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, a firefighter was also treated after breathing in some of the toxic fumes. There were no serious injuries as a result of the ammonia leak.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and over a dozen other agencies responded to the call and tested the city's water for contamination.

The ammonia was used to help refrigerate the building's large coolers.
