USDA Confirms Record Crop Predictions for 2016

As expected, Wisconsin farmers had a record year for corn and soybean production in 2016. The USDA's Annual Crop Production Summary showed that corn for grain output in the Badger State totaled a record 573 million bushels, up 16 percent from 2015. Wisconsin's corn for grain yield is also estimated at an all-time high of 178 bushels per acre, down slightly from earlier expectations, but still 14 bushels above the previous record set in 2015. Area harvested for grain was 3.22 million acres, up 220,000 acres above last year.

Corn for silage production came in around 16.6 million tons, down 12 percent from 2015. The silage yield was 21 tons per acre--about 1.5 tons higher than a year earlier. Producers harvested 790,000 acres of corn for silage, a decrease of 180,000 acres from 2015.

For the first time ever, state growers harvested more than 100 million bushels of soybeans during the past growing season, which was 16 percent above 2015. Growers also averaged a record high 55 bushels per acre in 2016, 5.5 bushels above the previous year. Harvested acreage was 80,000 acres above 2015.

All hay production for the state is estimated at 3.93 million tons, down three percent from 4.07 million tons in 2015. Producers averaged 2.95 tons per acre, up from 2.70 tons in 2015. All hay harvested acres are estimated at 1.33 million acres, down 180,000 acres from 2015. Alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures production is estimated at 3.20 million tons, down five percent from last year. Producers averaged 3.2 tons per acre. Other hay production is estimated at 726,000 tons, two percent above 2015.

And potato production for 2016 is estimated at 28.1 million cwt, up one percent for the year. Yields were 435 cwt per acre, down 10 cwt from 2015. Planted and harvested acres are estimated at 65,000 acres and 64,500 acres, respectively.
