Wisconsin Ag Connection - 01/15/2019

The Badger State was well represented during the final round of the American Farm Bureau Federation's Discussion Meet competition on Monday. During the final day of the AFBF's annual convention in New Orleans, Pittsville native Jackie Mundt of Kansas was named the winner of the event, with Kelly Wilfert from Manitowoc County placing third.

Mundt currently works as a communications and marketing manager at Kanza Cooperative Association in Wichita, Kansas. She is a graduate of California State University-Fresno and served as a state FFA officer from Wisconsin prior to being named national FFA president in 2004-05. She will get a new Ford truck for her efforts, along with a paid registration to the AFBF FUSION Conference in Milwaukee later this spring.

Wilfert, who was selected as the winner of the 2018 Discussion Meet contest at the state level in December, is a student at the Wisconsin Law School in Madison and earned her bachelor's degree from UW-Madison before returning to attend law school. She is a director on the Manitowoc County Farm Bureau board, served as a past state FFA officer, worked on the Exhibit Development Committee for Farm Wisconsin Discovery Center, interns at Investors Community Bank and served as an intern for the AFBF in Washington, D.C. Kelly will receive a Case IH 40" Combination Roll Cabinet and Top Chest and a $500 Case IH parts card. She will also take home $2,000 worth of Stanley Black & Decker merchandise.

Other Wisconsin Young Farmer competitors at the AFBF convention this week included Justin & Livia Doyle of Mineral Point, who were top 10 finalists for the Excellence in Agriculture Award; and Ryan & Lindsey Prahl of Marathon County, who competed for the Young Farmer and Agriculturist Achievement Award.

Meanwhile, the AFBF's Foundation for Agriculture presented its 'Book of the Year' award to Lisl Detlefsen of Wisconsin Rapids. Her publication, titled 'Right This Very Minute,' was illustrated by Renee Kurilla, and explains to children how every minute of every day, someone, somewhere, is working to bring food to their table. Detlefsen lives on a cranberry marsh in Wood County with her husband and two sons. She has previously published two other books, 'Time for Cranberries' and 'If You Had a Jetpack.'
