Avian Flu Spreads to Fourth Barron County Farm
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 05/04/2015

Another 16,000 breeding turkeys are being destroyed in Barron County after a fourth poultry farm was detected to have the H5 avian influenza. It is the eighth such bird flu case in Wisconsin since mid-April.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture says the property was immediately quarantined and neighboring properties with poultry are being told of the situation.

As in the previous cases, the DATCP said the strain of virus is not known to have caused disease in humans and is not expected to pose a risk to public health or the food supply.

The spread of the avian flu has affected to more than 1.5 million birds in Wisconsin since last month. Multiple outbreaks of the flu have occurred most recently in Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Arkansas, the Dakotas and Kansas leading to the depopulation of more than eight million turkeys and chickens.
