Laboski Honored For Her Work with UW-Extension
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 04/29/2011

An associate professor with the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who also works as a UW-Extension soil scientist, has been recognized for her effort in helping producers make wise nutrient management decisions for profitability, productivity and environmental stewardship.

Carrie Laboski has been honored with the 2011 Pound Award for her Extension work from the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.

"In a world of wildly fluctuating prices, regulations and environmental standards, Carrie's work is invaluable to Wisconsin's farmers," said John Shutske, Associate Dean and Program Director for Extension programs in agriculture.

An example of Laboski's impact on Wisconsin agriculture is her development of the Maximum Return to Nitrogen guidelines for the state. The guidelines provide the optimal economic return for nitrogen, rather than focusing on maximum yield. This work has led to more effective use of fertilizer as well as decreased risk for the environment.

Laboski also coordinates the annual Wisconsin Crop Management Conference, a two-and-a-half day program that involves up to 80 speakers and more than 100 presentations.
