Farmers Playing Catch Up in the Fields
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 05/08/2018

With only half of the week suitable for fieldwork in Wisconsin this past week, farmers worked long hours to get caught up with spring tillage and planting activities. The state's agriculture department said on Monday's crop report that many growers were busy spreading manure and planting small grains in between rain showers.

The weekly summary noted that rains were much heavier across southern Wisconsin last week, with some areas getting about six inches of rain. Topsoil moisture levels were rated four percent short, 73 percent adequate and 23 percent surplus.

As of Sunday, about a third of the spring tillage was completed across that state, which is slightly behind normal. Corn planting was 15 percent complete--one day ahead of last year, but four days behind the five-year average.

Five percent of the soybeans are now in the ground. And oat plantings were estimated to be 29-percent sowed. That's eight days behind last year and nine days behind average.

Winter wheat was 73 percent in good to excellent condition across the state.
