Teyanna Loether Selected as 68th Alice in Dairyland
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 05/11/2015

A Sauk County woman has been crowned as Wisconsin's 68th Alice in Dairyland. Teyanna Loether from Sauk City was selected for the title Saturday night at the Franciscan Center for Music Education at Silver Lake College in Manitowoc during a finale program hosted by Manitowoc County.

A new graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Loether holds a master's degree in animal sciences. She grew up on a dairy farm, where she showed horses, chickens and swine at the Sauk County Fair. She also served as the 2010 Fairest of the Fair. During graduate school, she worked as a teaching assistant and tutor and is working toward a Delta Certificate in Research, Teaching, and Learning.

"I am so speechless, as I have waited my whole life for the opportunity to apply for the position of Alice in Dairyland," Loether said upon being announced on stage. "I am so excited to begin this journey and promise to continue this legacy that all of the Alices have set before me."

Other finalists in the running during the competition were Kristin Klossner, New Glarus; Cassandra Mayer, Slinger; Stephanie Nagel, Valders; and Dormie Roberts, Burlington.

Serving as judges this year were Jim Dick, Wisconsin Department of Agriculture; Brenda Murphy, Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board; and Wendy Kannel, Wisconsin Farm Bureau/Ag in the Classroom Program. Former Alice in Dairyland Cheryl O'Brien served as the mistress of ceremonies.

Meanwhile, this year's out-going Alice, Zoey Brooks of Waupaca, said serving as the state's agricultural ambassador this past year has been an opportunity of a lifetime.

"Over the course of one incredible and memorable year, I have had the privilege of representing Wisconsin's hardworking agricultural community and sharing the story behind our state's diverse $88.3 billion industry," Brooks said. "Whether it was teaching students how cows are milked, cutting down the state's first Christmas tree, chatting with onlookers at one of my many E-85 fuel pumps visits, or diving face first into a cream puff at the Wisconsin State Fair, I tried during every moment to bring at lease one person closer to the industry that feeds, fuels and clothes us."

And before giving up her title, Brooks presented the '2015 Friend of Alice Award' to John Mercure and Erik Bilstad of WTMJ Radio in Milwaukee.

In addition to O'Brien, 13 other former 'Alices' were on hand to greet old friends and show their continued support for the program.

Teyanna officially begins her duties as Alice on June 1. Until then, Brooks will continue to make appearances at various events as her successor goes through a brief training process.

Alice in Dairyland is a full-time public relations professional employed by the state's division of agricultural development. Each year, she travels more than 40,000 miles throughout the state and nation, promoting Wisconsin products to audiences of all ages and types.

Located in far eastern Wisconsin, Manitowoc County leads the state in the average amount of milk produced per cow at 25,000 pounds per year. In fact, the county has more cows (about 93,000) than people and has approximately 300 dairy farms. Agriculture accounts for nearly 5,000 jobs and provides $1.4 billion dollars in economic activity for the county.

Next year, the Alice in Dairyland finals will be held in Dodge County on May 5-7, 2016.
