Registration Now Open for UW-Oshkosh Ag Sustainability Camp
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 05/15/2014

The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh has now opened the registration period for its first-ever sustainable agriculture summer program for youth ages 16 to 20. The program, 'Grow Your Future: Innovation, Trends and Best Practices in Sustainable Agriculture,' will be held June 22-26. Participants will stay on the UW-Oshkosh campus, with off site trips to local farms and agriculture-focused facilities.

"In addition to farming, our students will learn about the finance, technology, biology, veterinary sciences and environmental sustainability aspects," said Bunny Hansen, program manager for the camp.

Winnebago County UW-Extension Youth Development Leader Leonard Polzin says anybody's skill level has something to gain from taking part in the program.

"The goal of the program is to focus on career development, so we're welcoming students with that production agriculture background, as well as students that have heard about the industry but aren't necessarily involved in it yet," Polzin said.

Students will tour facilities at Fox Valley Technical College and UW Oshkosh. Other off-site tour locations include the Rosendale Dairy, biodigesters, robotic milking, a direct-market beef farm, GPS and GIS technology, and much more.

The program will be run by UW Oshkosh with support from Growing Oshkosh Inc., Fox Valley Technical College, UW-Extension, and the Winnebago County Farm Bureau.

The cost to attend the camp is $350, and it includes instruction, events, tours, twelve meals and Sunday through Wednesday lodging. Scholarships are available for those who have financial need.
