Panel Makes Recommendations for Deer Population Goals
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 05/21/2009

The public stakeholder panel has made its recommendations to the Department of Natural Resources for unit-by-unit, over-winter deer population goals as part of a public process. The group is comprised of a diverse group of 15 hunting, agricultural, forestry, local government, university and landowner organizations. More than 7,400 comments gathered through a new online survey.

"The stakeholder panel's recommendations provide the framework for the public process of setting deer population goals, which ultimately guide management policies," said DNR Secretary Matt Frank. "DNR will review the recommendations sent to us by the panel and have a plan available for public comment in the coming months. A number of steps remain in the important public process of setting population goals including public hearings, Natural Resources Board approval and legislative oversight."

Since 1994, deer population goals and deer management unit boundaries have been reviewed every three years in a series of public hearings. The Deer Management Unit Public Stakeholder Advisory Panel was formed to provide additional review and comment opportunities for all interested stakeholders.

The over-winter population goal is the desired number of deer present within a deer management unit following the fall deer hunting seasons. This number is presented as a number of deer per square mile of deer range. Deer range is measured in square miles of suitable habitat. Each winter, at the end of all hunting seasons, biologists estimate the number of deer in each DMU, compare that to the goal and use the result as a basis for setting harvest objectives for the next hunting season.
