Sow the Seeds Program Now Offering Grants
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 01/16/2009
As part of the Sow the Seeds project, the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy is offering small grants to support farmer education and outreach related to season extension for fruit and vegetable
production in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. The program is headquartered in Minneapolis.
In keeping with its mission, Sow the Seeds' funds are dedicated to supporting education among farmers who produce fruits and vegetables as a livelihood on a commercial basis. The money is not available to
schools, community gardens, home gardeners, etc.
Project coordinators say grants can be given in amounts of $2,000 to $5,000 and should be used between March 1 and December 31. Farmer outreach and education to support greater understanding and
adoption of season extension for fruit and vegetable production. Activities could include field days, organizing conferences/ trainings, and stipends for farmers to attend trainings. Additional ideas that are
compatible with the funding's overall purpose are welcome.
Priority will be given to organizations that work to advance the interests of sustainable and/or organic farms in their region; have a proven track record in farmer education; either have season extension
expertise within the organization or demonstrate the capacity to engage the expertise needed to provide quality farmer education and outreach; and provide a compelling plan to show how this funding would
provide educational opportunities that reflect the needs and aspirations of targeted farm populations.
Award recipients will be asked to provide a brief mid-term and final progress report and a summary of insights gained from funded activities. You can learn more about Sow the Seeds at
