Virus Causes Over 200 Cows to Die on Portage Co. Farm
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 01/17/2011

Investigators are working to determine what caused the death of 200 cows in Portage County last week. The sheriff's department says they were notified on Friday about numerous dead cows lying in a field on a farm near Amherst in the town of Stockton.

The farm's owner says he is working with a veterinarian to determine the exact cause of the animals' illness, but suspects either infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, a common respiratory disease found in cattle, or Bovine Virus Diarrhea, or BVD.

Meanwhile, the Portage County Humane Society is leading an investigation into the incident.

Reports say samples of the dead animals are being sent to the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Lab in Madison for further testing.

Authorities spent much of the weekend removing the animals by the semi-load to be disposed of.
