Wisconsin Ag Connection - 06/12/2013

Membership in the state's largest agriculture education organization is not only at a 29-year high this year, but the financial support behind the Wisconsin FFA has reached a level never seen before in its eight decade-long history. During the 84th Wisconsin FFA Convention in Madison on Tuesday, State FFA Foundation Board President Julie Larson announced that sponsorships and other contributions to the organization have totaled over $414,555 this year--12-percent above its projected goal.

"We are so proud to announce that giving to the Foundation has reached an all-time high," Larson said. "Every dollar given goes to help further the mission of FFA."

Student members were recognized throughout the day in various events. Speaking contest winners included Rachel Leege, Sauk Prairie, Discussion Meet; Sydney Endres, Lodi, Extemporaneous Speaking; Jennifer Rynes, Brookwood, Prepared Public Speaking; and Ally Magnin, Oconto Falls, Creed Speaking. The Spencer FFA won the Jr. High Quiz Bowl Contest, and Amery earned top honors for Parli Pro.

Kaleb Krzyszton, Cochrane-Fountain City, won the 2013 Junior High Essay Contest. And Moriah Zarling, Thorp, was the winner of the GROWMARK Essay Contest.

Individual Proficiency Award winners were also recognized on stage. All of the state winners will advance to national competition this fall at the National FFA Convention in Louisville, Kentucky.

Attendees were also motivated throughout the day by various speakers, including National FFA Vice President Lindsey Anderson and youth authors Kyle Steele and Grant Steel. Hypnotist Jim Wand was also on hand to entertain the crowd last night.

The convention continues on Wednesday with more award announcements, like the State FFA Star Awards, adult recognition, the induction of candidates earning their State FFA Degrees, and the naming of the 2013-14 state officer team. The conference wraps-up on Thursday with the naming of the National Chapter Award winner and the announcement of the new state FFA president.

Wisconsin Ag Connection will continue to provide up-to-the-minute updates throughout the convention, thanks to a special sponsorship by Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board, Foremost Farms USA and Landmark Cooperative Services.
