Beginning Apple Growers Field Day Slated for March 6-8
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 01/20/2020

A field day for people wanting to start a business growing and selling apples will be held in Madison this winter. The School for Beginning Apple Growers will be offered March 6-8 on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.

The program is designed to help aspiring business owners make smart decisions. Participants will learn about orchard design, selecting rootstocks and varieties, marketing options and financial planning. They will also be introduced to a new tool designed to help growers predict costs and eventual income from tree crops.

"Our goal is to help people understand the business of running an orchard from site selection, land preparation and selecting varieties and root stocks, to annual maintenance, marketing, sales and management," says Coordinator John Hendrickson. "It is especially important to recognize the labor and financial realities of running a farm so that growers can set realistic goals and improve their chances of success."

The field day is part of the Midwest School for Beginning Apple Growers, which is run by CIAS. Registration costs $375 and includes lunch and snacks. For more information or to register, call 608-265-3704.
