UWP, Dairy Task Force Offering Manure Storage Forum
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 06/12/2009

The Regional Dairy Modernization Task Force, a collaborative effort between the University of Wisconsin-Platteville; Southwest Wisconsin Technical College; Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin Extension offices; and several industry leaders, will offer a forum addressing manure management for moderate sized dairies on June 17 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Gerry Breitsprecker's dairy farm near Lancaster.

Speakers include Lynda Schweikert, head of the Grant County Land and Water Conservation Department, and will discuss programs to assist with manure storage and management. Ralph Hemling is the manure storage design engineering specialist with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture. Hemling designed the manure storage pit at Breitsprecker's farm and will talk about the storage facility's design and functioning. Dave Cauffman, from Cauffman's Slurry Transfer in Fennimore, a custom manure applicator, will discuss ways to achieve maximum efficiency in the transportation and field application of manure.

"This event will provide an excellent opportunity for dairies with one hundred to several hundred cows to hear about options in manure handling, achieving efficient storage of manure and meeting environmental regulations," said Ted Bay, the crops and farm management agent for Grant and Lafayette counties.
