Jefferson County Looking Forward to Farm Tech Days
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 06/26/2019

Less than a month remains before hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of agriculturists and consumers make their way to Walter Grain Farms to take in this year's Wisconsin Farm Technology Days in Jefferson County. During the event's special media day on Tuesday, the host family opened their doors for reporters to take an early peak at the site of the 66th annual farm show, which will be held July 23-25 near Johnson Creek.

The operation is owned by Mike & Sarah Walter and their two sons and their wives, Adam & Heather Walter and Brad & Kristi Walter. The farm grows corn, soybeans, winter wheat and alfalfa on over 6,000 acres; and they run a farm tiling and drainage business. The family also has the distinction of holding the show in the past, when Mike's parents Bernard & Beverly Walter hosted Wisconsin Farm Progress Days at the same farm in 1984.

County Extension Agent LaVern Georgson said the area is extremely diverse in its agriculture, where production of grain, dairy, cattle and poultry are prevalent.

"Jefferson County has the largest trout operation, largest ethanol plant and largest nursery in the entire state," Georgson said. "It's also rich in tourism and recreation because of its location between Madison and Milwaukee and proximity to lakes and rivers."

Meanwhile, Melissa Gerner, the committee's executive secretary, said showgoers will be treated to a lot of unique features at this year's event.

"We are holding extended hours on Wednesday evening, July 24th, where the public can take in the show until 7:00 p.m. at a reduced rate and enjoy a special Block Party," she noted. "There's also the first-ever Ag Career Day for youth and heritage plowing demonstrations featuring the same equipment used during the 1950s, when Farm Progress Days first started, as well as 1984 when we last hosted the show."

The grounds will once again be powered by on-site generators. Food and beverage stands will be placed throughout Tent City. And the popular 'Innovation Square' will be back again this year, featuring farmer-inventions and other exhibitors showcasing their products.

As always, Farm Tech Days will hold field demonstrations, entertainment and educational sessions in the Family Living Tent, free skin care screenings, and an equine area featuring young horse enthusiasts from the surrounding area.
