Wisconsin Ag Connection - 07/13/2020

The Wisconsin FFA Association has a new president. Joe Schlies of the Denmark FFA Chapter was elected during the final segments of the Wisconsin FFA Online Convention on Friday. Schlies is a student at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls majoring in Agricultural Business. His Supervised Agricultural Experience focused primarily on communications, as they coordinating various FFA events, posted pictures on social media, and previously managed public relations in his home chapter. He replaces Collin Weltzien of the Arcadia FFA.

Other members of the newly elected 2020-21 state officer team include Jackie Rosenbush, Spooner; Ben Styer, Menomonie; Carisa Cleven, Tomah; Kendra Jentz, River Ridge; Brooks Lueck, Wisconsin Heights; Olivia Lulich, Mauston; Cortney Zimmerman, Spencer; Katelyn Loehrke, Weyauwega-Fremont; Katrina Hoesly, Denmark; and Melissa Konkel, Big Foot.

Konkel was also the winner of this year's State FFA Talent competition, with Zach Graham of the Platteville FFA placing second.

Also on Friday, the Wisconsin FFA Star Farmer Award went to Emily Makos of Juda. Katrina Hoesly, Denmark, was named the Star in Agricultural Placement. This year's Star in Agribusiness is Alex Brzezinski of Stevens Point. And the Star in Agriscience winner is Kayla Reed from Pulaski.

Earlier this week, the Waupaca FFA was named the winner of the National Chapter Award--an elite honor that the program has received for 13 of the past 18 years. The runner up was the Weyauwega-Fremont FFA, with Denmark placing third.

"This week we celebrated the end of another successful FFA year and kick off the beginning of the next," Weltzien said in his final remarks before gaveling the virtual convention to a close. "The Wisconsin FFA has stood the time for 91 years. And the challenges we've overcome this year have only solidified the notion that our organization will be around for many years to come."
