Wolves Attack Prized Sheep at Price County Farm
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 06/28/2016

A northern Wisconsin farm couple is struggling with how to deal with wolf depredation issues on their farm. Paul and Judy Canik of Butternut say wolves killed 17 of their most valuable sheep in late May.

They told WJFW-TV in Rhinelander that all of the lost animals were bighorn ewes. The couple said in 56 years of marriage, they have never seen anything like what they experienced the morning of May 31 when the attack took place.

The Caniks often sell their top rams for more than $5,000 per animal. The breeding ewes, killed by wolves, will cost more than $1,000 each to replace, the TV report noted.

Last week, the Department of Natural Resources said Wisconsin's wolf population was the highest on record. But since a judge's ruling in 2014, wolves have been placed back on the federal endangered species list, which means they are no longer able to be legally hunted.
