UW-RF Awarded Funds for Sustainable Agriculture Project
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 06/22/2007

The University of Wisconsin-River Falls will receive competitive grant money through the USDA for a sustainable agriculture project. According to U.S. Senator Herb Kohl, chairman of the Senate's Agriculture Appropriations panel, the school will get over $919,600 as part of the Ag Department's annual budget.

"This is exciting news for UW-River Falls and our state's agriculture community," Kohl said. "Sustainable agriculture projects like these promote profitable farming through sound environmental practices. Wisconsin has been a leader in this practice of farming and has proven that it is both effective and efficient. I'm proud that UW-River Falls won this competitive grant."

Last fall, UW-RF added a new study option providing courses on sustainable agriculture within their College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences.

Last year Kohl included more than $16 million for the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Extension program in the USDA's FY2007 budget. This funding supports sustainable agriculture nationwide with $12.2 million for research and $4.02 million for extension activities to help farmers who want to implement more sustainable practices.
