WCMA Urges White House to Drop Mexican Tariffs on U.S. Cheese
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 06/29/2018

A Wisconsin farm group has joined a growing number of dairy manufacturers and producer organizations in urging the Trump Administration to suspend steel and aluminum tariffs on Mexican products to encourage an end to Mexico's retaliatory tariffs on U.S. cheese. The Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association said in a statement that nearly $50 million worth of state dairy products reached Mexican consumers in 2017, which is more than a third of all cheese exported from the state last year.

"Mexico is the largest international buyer of U.S. dairy products and is Wisconsin's largest market for cheese exports," said WCMA Director John Umhoefer. "Our cheese manufacturer members with export sales are expressing concern that their customers may turn sales over to competitors in the European Union."

The WCMA adds that exports of quality U.S. dairy products have been crucial in marketing a growing U.S. milk supply. Last year, nearly 15 percent of all U.S. milk was marketed as dairy products for international customers, and Mexico dominates the field.

Specifically, the 65 dairy manufacturers and farm groups want to see aluminum and steel products be suspended so that Mexican tariffs on U.S. cheese would keep their tariff from going from 15 percent to 25 percent as of July 5.
