DNR to Conduct EIS on Proposed Bayfield Co. Hog Farm
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 07/01/2015

Just as it does with large dairy farms, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced it will use an Environmental Impact Statement process for the proposed Badgerwood swine operation in Bayfield County. In a statement on Tuesday, the agency said it has decided the EIS process would be the best way to comply with the Wisconsin Environmental Policy Act requirements for environmental analysis in advance of any permit decisions for the project.

Last year, the Iowa-based Reicks View Farms purchased over 560 acres in the town of Eileen, which is about eight miles southwest of Ashland. They were in the process of obtaining state permits to house over 25,000 animals before the county board began holding meetings about the issue in January.

Many of the residents in the county say the project could pose a risk to their drinking water if the farm's waste is not handled properly. But the farm's owners say they have sound plans on how to handle manure, just as they do with other operations they own in Iowa.

State DNR officials say the first step in the analysis process will be to provide an opportunity for interested persons to identify important issues to be addressed in the EIS.
