Wisconsin Operations Recognized for Dairy Sustainability Efforts
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 07/03/2017
The Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy has announced its 2017 recipients of the National Sustainability Awards. This year, two Wisconsin dairy operations were among the winners of the program, which recognizes dairy farms, businesses and partnerships whose
sustainable practices positively impact the health and well-being of consumers, communities, animals and the environment.
Kinnard Farms of Casco was one of the three top national winners for Outstanding Dairy Farm Sustainability. ICUSD President Barbara O'Brien said the Kewaunee County farm retains the area's young, college-educated residents by employing them to
innovate farm technology.
"The Kinnards are often on the cutting edge as they made a first-of-its-kind sand recycling center that uses no freshwater in the process to separate, wash and dry sand for repeated use," O'Brien said. "Sand is this farm's preferred bedding material because it
provides comfort and sure footing for cows and is bacteria free, keeping udders healthy."
Meanwhile, Kellercrest Registered Holsteins of Mount Horeb was recognized in the area of Outstanding Achievement in Resource Stewardship.
Judges evaluated each of the nominees' sustainability practices based on their economic, environmental and community impact, also known as triple-bottom-line success. The panel also looked for learning, innovation, improvement, scalability and replicability.
