National Holstein Convention Kicks-Off in Wisconsin Dells
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 06/25/2008

For the first time since 1986, the Dairy State is hosting the National Holstein Convention this year. The forum takes place through Thursday at the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells.

Earlier in the week, breeders were invited to participate in convention kicks-off farm tours, which featured some of the best herds in Wisconsin. That group also toured NASCO in Fort Atkinson, along with the National Dairy Shrine and Hoard's Dairyman Farm.

The National Holstein Convention Sale was held last night at Heatherstone Enterprises near Baraboo.

On Wednesday, a panel discussion will be focused on 'The Future of the Dairy Industry from a Young Holstein Breeder's Perspective.' The insightful and inspiring session will take place at 1:45 p.m., and will feature Mark Crave, Waterloo; Randy Gross, Elkton, S.D.; Stephen Maddox, Jr., Riverdale, California; Kylie Quesnel, Whiting, Vermont; and Mark Ulness, Valders. They represent a wide array of dairy operations, from coast to coast, in terms of management systems and number of cows.

Meanwhile, some of the youth in the state Holstein industry will also be busy at the convention. Several members will compete as finalists in the National Distinguished Junior Member competition. And Jordan Siemers placed third in the Junior Division of the annual Dairy Jeopardy contest.

So far, over 1,500 adults and juniors have registered for the National Holstein Convention, which is thought to be the largest convention in the Holstein Association's history.
