Walker Signs Turkey Donation Bill into Law
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 07/02/2015

The bill that facilitates the donation of excess wild turkey meat to food pantries across the state has been signed into law by Governor Scott Walker.

The measure was authored by Rep. Joel Kleefisch of Oconomowoc, who says the idea builds on Wisconsin's existing Deer Donation Program which allows hunters to donate extra venison meat to participating food processors.

"This bill provides a framework that will give hunters an opportunity to help put healthy meals on the tables of needy families in their communities," Kleefisch said. "This is a simple way to get a tasty meal into kitchens all over Wisconsin."

Since the deer program began in 2000, hunters have donated more than 85,000 deer which were processed into nearly 4 million pounds of ground venison.

Kleefisch adds that he's confident that by adding wild turkey as an option, the program will continue to grow and will have a lasting impact for years to come.
