Registration Open for Local Food Business Seminars
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 01/17/2014

From food safety to marketing, the Local Food Business Seminars are back in 2014 with these timely topics. Registration is now open for the February and March sessions from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture.

Seminars on February 11-14 will be led by DATCP meat and food safety experts. The speakers will discuss food licensing exemptions, license requirements for shared kitchens and labeling. Other topics will include poultry exemptions, retail sale requirements and interstate laws.

The food safety seminar will allow participants to learn what to expect when working with DATCP meat and food safety inspectors. There will be time available for questions to address individual needs and concerns.

The food safety seminar hosted in Madison will include a special afternoon presentation by Chris Blanchard of Flying Rutabega Works. Blanchard will walk you through the 12 steps of on-farm food safety and how to avoid on-farm food safety hazards.

The marketing seminars on March 4-7 will focus on branding and marketing your products. Tera Johnson, founder of Tera's Whey and currently with the Food and Finance Institute at UW-Extension, will discuss local food business models, identifying your best target consumers, market-based pricing and building a brand identity. Becky Kronberg of the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board will cover social media and online marketing.
