Last Week Provided Ideal Hay Making Weather

Patience finally paid off last week for farmers who have been waiting for dry weather to get their hay crop off the fields. The weekly crop report from the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service on Monday noted that the lack of rain finally allowed farmers to bale hay, cut second crop alfalfa and spray fields. Many reporters noted that corn was normal to ahead of normal in height for early July, though some fields were uneven due to excess moisture.

As of Sunday, the corn crop was rated 83 percent good to excellent. About 10 percent of soybeans were blooming statewide, which is a few days ahead of normal for this time of year.

Ninety-one percent of oats were at or beyond the heading stage, with 25 percent of the crop now turning color. Sixty-seven percent of winter wheat has also turned color last week.

The first cutting of alfalfa was 97 percent harvested, as 41 percent of farmers statewide reported having their second crop harvested--which is the second highest percent harvested by this date in more than 35 years.

And in the Central Sands area of the state, potato conditions were rated 90 percent good to excellent.
