State Cheese Production Falls for Fourth Straight Month

Wisconsin cheese factories manufactured less product during the month of June when compared to the previous year. According to the latest dairy product summary from the USDA, the state produced 290.5 million pounds of cheese during the month. That was a slight 0.5 percent less than last year, and 0.1 percent lower than this past May (which had more days on the calendar).

Nationally, about 1.16 billion pounds of cheese was produced in the United States in June. That was a 2.7 percent increase from 2021, but 2.3 percent less compared to the amount manufactured during the previous month.

Wisconsin's production of American cheese decreased as the state produced 85.3 million pounds, about 4.5 percent less than last year, and 3.3 percent below last month's production. Cheddar output also fell by 6.8 percent compared to 2021 to total 56.7 million pounds, and fell 4.1 percent from the month earlier. Italian cheese production was at 140.6 million pounds, about 1.8 percent over last year, and 2.0 percent higher for the month. And Mozzarella produced in Wisconsin totaled 90.6 million pounds--up 1.7 percent from June 2021, and 1.1 percent more than May 2022.

Dry Whey output in Wisconsin was recorded at 26.6 million pounds, which was up 11.6 percent from last year, and 8.5 percent higher compared to last month.
