USDA Sends First DMC Payments to Dairy Farmers
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 07/12/2019

Dairy farmers across the nation began receiving checks under the new Dairy Margin Coverage program this week. According to the National Milk Producers Federation, nearly 10,000 producers signed up for the DMC in the past month, representing more than a quarter of all U.S. dairy operations.

"DMC aid represents significant improvement from previous programs, and with dairy farmers facing a fifth year of low prices, receiving better assistance in a timely fashion is a matter of survival for some family farms," said NFPF CEO Jim Mulhern. "The DMC program doesn't replace a healthy market, but it is a crucial safety net in turbulent times. All dairy producers should strongly consider enrolling, and to look closely at coverage at the $9.50 maximum level."

The DMC program pays dairy producers when the difference between the all-milk price and the average feed price falls below a dollar amount selected by the producer. It provides catastrophic coverage at no cost, other than an annual $100 fee that may be waived, and offers higher buy-up coverage. It replaces the Margin Protection Program.

Enrollment for the program continues through September 20, with coverage being retroactive to January 1.
