Farmers Continue to Dodge Rain to Harvest Hay Crops

It was another wet and rainy week for most parts of Wisconsin last week. The latest crop/weather report confirmed scattered reports of storm damage, with heavy rain and winds lodging some crops and significant flooding in the southeast. The summary also noted that early-planted corn was beginning to silk in some areas.

Topsoil moisture levels were rated two percent short, 72 percent adequate and 26 percent surplus.

As of Sunday, about five-percent of the corn crop was silking, which is nearly a week behind last year. Corn condition was 66 percent good to excellent, down three percentage points from the previous week.

Over a third of the state's soybean crop has bloomed--nine days behind the same time in 2016 and one day behind the five-year average. The condition of the beans were at 71 percent good to excellent.

All but seven percent of the oats have now headed and about half of the crop has turned color. Reporters did find some fields where harvesting has already begun.

And the second cutting of alfalfa was 72 percent complete, six days behind last year, but two days ahead of the average. Third crop is now five percent baled or chopped, which is also slightly behind the norm.
