Families Can Find Adventure at Wisconsin Farm Technology Days
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 07/09/2008

The 2008 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days will have something for everyone, including children who attend the state's largest outdoor farm expo. The 'Family Farm Adventure' will provide hands-on agricultural experiences for families with children ages 4 to 12.

The Family Farm Adventure area is connected to the show's Youth Tent. Mark Strohschein, agriscience teacher at Green Bay East High School, says adults should bring along a camera to take advantage of the photo areas.

"Wisconsin has an extremely diverse agricultural industry," he notes. "The area will provide opportunities for visitors of all ages and backgrounds to learn more about our state's wide variety of farms and agribusinesses."

Members of the Green Bay East FFA and FFA Alumni, working with other local organizations, will host several interactive stations, including:

** Butterflies, Caterpillars and Other Critters of the Insect World. In this area, visitors will learn the significant impact insects have on agriculture. Kids can also learn what it means to be an entomologist--one of the many 'hats' of agriculture.

** Floriculture and Plant Identification. The United States is the largest floral producer in the world. In this area, visitors will learn about the growing cycles, tools, and plants used in the florist industry. The History and Future of Agriculture. This station will teach children about the farm equipment used in agriculture, and the many different types of farms. They will also have an opportunity to play in sandboxes and grain boxes, and learn about how agriculture has changed during the past 100 years.

** The Fishing Experience. Natural resources careers are also an important aspect of Wisconsin agriculture. At this station, kids will have the opportunity to fish in a pond and “catch” some facts about Wisconsin wildlife.

** The Veterinary/Pet Care Experience. Animal health and welfare is essential, whether the animal is a horse, cow, dog or cat. Visitors to this station can learn new facts about caring for their pets. They will also have the opportunity to visit with live animals, which could be an alpaca or a dairy goat. They will also meet the people who raise and care for these animals.

** Fish Aquarium Station. Whether caring for fish in a small indoor aquarium or a large outdoor pond, there is a lot to learn about aquaculture, another agricultural industry. Visitors will learn to identify various species of fish as well as the necessary skills to keep them healthy.

Wisconsin Farm Technology Days will be held July 15-17 at Country Aire Farms near Greenleaf.
