Amish Woman Dies After SUV Hits Buggy in Wood Co.
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 07/19/2017

A member of the Amish community in central Wisconsin lost her life on Monday when the driver of an SUV struck the buggy she was riding in with her sister. The Wood County Sheriff's Department says 20-year-old Rebecca Helmuth died in the accident.

Reports say the motor vehicle driven by a Granton woman was heading westbound when it struck the buggy as it crossed an intersection.

Helmuth and her 17-year-old sister were ejected from the horse-drawn carriage. That girl was flown to a local hospital, but her condition has not been released.

The operator of the SUV was also transported to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.

The accident happened Monday evening near Wisconsin Rapids on State Highway 73.

This was the state's second vehicle vs. buggy accident in as many days. On Sunday, an Amish buggy was struck from behind by a pickup truck near Darlington in Lafayette County. No fatalities were reported in that incident.
