Report Shows Mostly Good to Excellent Crops in Wisconsin
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 08/04/2020

A relatively dry and cool week made conditions more comfortable for livestock and outdoor workers. It was also excellent for combining small grains and drying hay, according to the latest weekly crop progress summary from the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service. Reporters say corn and soybeans were developing ears and pods.

Topsoil moisture conditions were rated two percent very short, 14 percent short, 78 percent adequate and six percent surplus.

As of Sunday, 84 percent of the corn was silking--more than two weeks ahead of last year and six days better than the five-year average. Corn at dough stage was 19 percent, which was also ahead of normal. Corn condition was rated 81 percent good to excellent statewide, down slightly from a week ago.

All but 11 percent of the soybeans were blooming. That was 24 days ahead of last year and eight days ahead of average. Sixty-three percent of the beans were setting pods and 83 of the crop was rated good to excellent.

Just over a third of the oats have been harvested, a week ahead of 2019 levels and slightly better than the average for early-August. Farmers also had 62 percent of the winter wheat off the fields.

The second cutting of alfalfa was nearly complete as 38 percent have already hit the fields to cut third crop. All hay condition was reported 80 percent good to excellent statewide.
