State Cheese Production Rises for First Time in 6 Months

Wisconsin cheese plants made more product during June when compared to the same month a year earlier--making it the first time in the past six months that year-to-year output rose. According to the latest dairy product summary from the USDA, the state produced 281.5 million pounds of cheese in June. That was 1.0 percent more than last year, and a slight 0.8 percent higher than this past May (even though that month had more days on the calendar).

Nationally, about 1.1 billion pounds of cheese was produced in the United States in June. That was a 3.5 percent increase from 2019, and a fractional 0.3 percent hike compared to the amount manufactured during the previous month.

Wisconsin's production of American cheese increased as the state produced 85.3 million pounds, about 3.2 percent more than last year, but 2.6 percent below last month's production. Cheddar output also rose 1.5 percent compared to 2019 to total 59.5 million pounds, but went down 4.0 percent from the month earlier. Italian cheese production was at 139.7 million pounds, about 0.3 percent below last year, but 0.6 percent higher for the month. And Mozzarella produced in Wisconsin totaled 93.. million pounds--about 0.7 percent less than June 2019, but 1.4 percent above May 2020.

Dry Whey output in Wisconsin was recorded at 25.8 million pounds, which was down 0.6 percent from last year, and 3.8 percent lower compared to last month.
