State School Superintendent Evers to Challenge Walker
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 07/24/2017

Saying his decision is not yet final, Wisconsin State School Superintendent Tony Evers has filed the necessary paperwork to began a campaign for governor in 2018.

Evers, who's been at the helm of the Department of Public Instruction since 2009, will run as a Democrat. He's been at odds with Governor Scott Walker and his administration since the Act 10 legislation passed in 2011, which eliminated collective bargaining privileges for most public employee unions, including teachers.

"As I continue talking with voters about the future of our state, this is the next logical step for me to take," Evers said on Friday. "My record of public service and leadership on behalf of Wisconsin families, kids, and educators brings a unique and different choice for voters. One that I believe provides a compelling alternative to the status quo."

Evers, who is 65, was easily re-elected as state superintendent in April, earning over 70 percent of the vote.

So far, only Milwaukee businessman Andy Gronik and Bob Harlow of Barneveld have officially announced a run for governor as Democrats.
