Over 120 Head of Cattle Perish in Clark Co. Barn Fire
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 07/22/2013
The owners of a Clark County dairy farm spent the weekend coping and cleaning up from a devastating barn fire that destroyed their entire milking barn and killed 121 head of cows and young stock last week. The blaze broke out Thursday evening at the Naelder Farm near Granton.
Granton Fire Chief Chester Oldham told Wisconsin Ag Connection that the fire started in the silo room, where an unloader bearing was being repaired just moments earlier.
"They were using a blowtorch to repair the equipment and left for just a short while," Oldham said. "About 30 minutes later, they discovered that a portion of the building was on fire."
Oldham said a number of other heifers were saved from an adjacent barn and taken to a neighboring farm.
Four fire departments responded to the fire, where their efforts were hampered by hot temperatures and high winds. Several firefighters had to be treated for heat exhaustion.
The barn and three other structures were a total loss.
