Wisconsin Oat & Wheat Production Forecast is Higher

Wisconsin's 2008 oat production is forecast at 10.9 million bushels, up from 10.7 million bushels in 2007. The state's agriculture department says that is also a slight increase from last year's bushel yield. Farmers plan to harvest 160,000 acres for grain, equal to a year ago. Yields are expected to be 68 bushels per acre, up from 67 bushels last year.

State producers also expect to produce 22.4 million bushels of winter wheat in 2008. This is 20 percent more than the 2007 crop. The area harvested for grain is expected to reach 330,000 acres, while yield is expected to average 68 bushes per acre. The number of acres for harvest has increased for three consecutive years, and, in 2008, is predicted to be 60,000 more than the previous year.

Nationally, oat production is forecast at 92.9 million bushels, an increase of one percent from 2007. The expected yield at the national level is 64.4 bushels per acre, up from 60.9 bushels per acre a year ago. Acres harvested for grain are expected to reach 1.44 million acres, down from 1.51 million acres last year. U.S. winter wheat production is forecast at 1.86 billion bushels. This is up two percent from last month and 23 percent above 2007. The U.S. yield is forecast at 46.3 bushels per acre, up one bushel from last month and 4.1 bushels above last year. The area expected to be harvested for grain totals 40.3 million acres, up 12 percent from 2007.
