Wisconsin Ag Connection - 07/25/2016

The National FFA Organization has announced the names of this year's American Star Finalists awards, which includes one student from the Badger State. Nathan Leystra of the Randolph Cambria-Friesland FFA Chapter is in the running for American Star in Agricultural Placement.

Leystra won the same award at the state level in 2013. He is also a former National FFA Proficiency Award winner in the area of Grain Production in 2012 and was a national finalist for another proficiency award in Ag Sales the following year.

A student at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, Nathan assists on his family's 1,000 acre corn and soybean cash crop operation, where he is involved in the tilling, harvesting, drying and marketing decisions. He also works for his father's Pioneer Seed dealership.

Star awards recognize students who have developed outstanding agricultural skill and competency through their career development programs, demonstrated outstanding management skills, earned the American FFA Degree and have met other agricultural education, scholarship and leadership requirements.

Each star finalist receives $2,000 from the National FFA Foundation and earns the opportunity to participate in an international experience tour to Costa Rica. A panel of judges will interview the students and select one winner for each area at the National FFA Convention this fall in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Winners will receive an additional $2,000 award.
