State Egg Output Still Making Good Strides

Wisconsin egg production during June was 133 million eggs, up 37 percent from last year. According to the latest USDA Chickens and Eggs report, the average number of all layers on hand during the month was 5.72 million, down one percent from last month, but up 39 percent from 2015 when avian flu wiped out a lot of the state's poultry population.

Eggs per 100 layers in Wisconsin last month were 2,324, virtually unchanged from May 2016, but down two percent from last year.

Nationally, egg production totaled 8.21 billion during June, up nine percent from last year. Production included 7.10 billion table eggs, and 1.11 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.02 billion were broiler-type and 96 million were egg-type. The total number of layers averaged 359 million, up eight percent from last year.
