A Much Dryer Week in Wisconsin Farm Fields
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 07/29/2014

With the exception of a few spotty showers, farm fields were in much better condition last week for making hay and allowing crops to grow. The weekly crop report from the state's agriculture department on Monday said the sunshine and wind brought topsoil moistures levels to 23 percent short.

Farmers took advantage of the weather to make dry hay and catch up on chemical and fertilizer applications. Small grain harvests were taking off as well, though some problems with mold and disease in winter wheat were noted. Inadequate soil moisture remained a concern as both corn and soybeans were in the midst of pollination.

As of Sunday, about 44 percent of corn was silking statewide. Corn condition was rated 72 percent good to excellent.

Soybeans were 65 percent blooming and 25 percent setting pods. Soybeans condition was rated 74 percent good to excellent.

Sixty-seven percent of the oat crop was turning color, with 12 percent harvested for grain. About 98 percent of the state's winter wheat was turning color, with 22 percent harvested for grain. Seventy-four percent of the crop was in good to excellent condition.

And the second cutting of alfalfa was 81 percent complete and the third cutting was eight percent harvested. All hay condition was rated 85 percent good to excellent.
