Wisconsin Students Honored by National Dairy Shrine
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 07/26/2007
The National Dairy Shrine recently recognized eight college students, including three from Wisconsin, for their outstanding
leadership skills, academic abilities, and interest in the dairy industry. The prestigious Student Recognition Award honors
exceptional graduating seniors from across the country as they begin careers in the dairy industry.
Leah Johnson graduated in May 2007 with an agricultural education degree from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. She
is an accomplished judge of dairy cattle with numerous individual and team honors, including second-place individual at the
2006 All American; and fourth-place team at the 2006 National Intercollegiate Dairy Judging Contest. She was an active
member of the UW-RF Dairy Club, an officer of the National American Dairy Science Association-Student Affiliate Division,
president of the UW-RF National Agri-Marketing Association, president of the UW-RF Agricultural Communicators of
Tomorrow, and a member of Alpha Tau Alpha and Sigma Alpha. Leah is now employed by the American Jersey Cattle
Association as a Midwest field representative. Her long-term goals include graduate school and teaching high school or
post-secondary students.
Lea McCullough, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison with degrees in dairy science and life sciences
communication, is an experienced judge of dairy cattle with many honors, including team wins at the 2007 Southwest Livestock
Exposition and the 2005 All American. She was active in the Badger Dairy Club, serving as president and vice-president, the
Association of Women in Agriculture, Collegiate FFA, and the Holstein Association throughout her college career. A summer
position with Cybil Fisher Photography opened the door to a career in dairy cattle photography, and Lea is currently employed
as a photographer for Cybil Fisher. She also plans to continue showing and marketing Holstein cattle and one day operate her
own farm.
And Lindsey Worden earned degrees in dairy science and life science communications from the University of
Wisconsin-Madison. Lindsey has an impressive record in dairy cattle judging, including high individual overall and in linear
evaluation and first-place team at the 2005 All-American; first-place team in oral reasons and third overall at the 2006 National
Intercollegiate Dairy Judging Contest. She also was an active leader in the Badger Dairy Club, Association of Women in
Agriculture, and the National Junior Holstein Association. Lindsey is now employed by Holstein Association USA as a public
relations specialist. She is excited to begin her career in a position that combines her passion for Holsteins, dairy promotion,
and developing youth programs.
Each of the winners will each receive a $500 cash prize and will be honored at National Dairy Shrine's annual banquet at
World Dairy Expo in Madison this fall.
