State GOP Leaders Calling for New Mining Bill in 2013
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 01/03/2013
Assembly Speaker-elect Robin Vos of Rochester and Majority Leader Scott Suder from Abbotsford have announced the first bill they plan to introduce in the 2013-2014 legislative session. The two GOP lawmakers say reforming the outdated mining laws in Wisconsin, which failed to see the light of day when
their party lost members in the legislature after the 2011 spring recall elections, is their top priority.
"I'm hopeful all the interested parties can come together to protect our environment and make mining reform happen," said Speaker-elect Vos. "It would irresponsible to ignore this great opportunity for job creation."
Citing a study from NorthStar Economics, Inc., the two lawmakers claim that a new iron ore mine in northern Wisconsin could generate a $2 billion economic impact for the state--including $20.6 million state and local tax revenue over the two-year construction process and a $604 million annual economic impact
once operational.
The study also found that thousands of new jobs could be created from a new mining operation.
"Our state has a rich history of mining," said Rep. Suder. "Democrats and Republicans agree we should update our mining laws to hopefully bring a new mine and thousands of jobs to Wisconsin."
Assembly Republicans are joining Governor Walker this week during his visits to companies that could benefit from a new iron ore mine in Wisconsin to push for mining reforms.
