Wisconsin Ag News Headlines
State's Total Cheese Output Rose in June
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 08/04/2014

Wisconsin's cheese production in June was up from the same time last year. The USDA reports that the state's dairy plants produced 235.4 million pounds of cheese during the month--which was a 3.5 percent increase from June 2013, but three percent less compared to this past May, which is partly due to the fact that June had less days on the calendar.

Nationally, 916 million pounds of cheese was produced--about 0.5 percent more than June 2013, but 5.2 percent below the previous month's production totals.

Wisconsin's production of American cheese decreased as the state produced 70 million pounds, about 0.7 percent less than last year, and 3.5 percent lower than last month's production. Cheddar output fell by 1.4 percent compared to 2013 to total 47.4 million pounds, and was 3.7 percent less than the month earlier. Italian cheese was at 120.5 million pounds, about 7.1 percent above last year, but 0.5 percent lower for the month. And Mozzarella produced in Wisconsin totaled 83 million pounds--about 8.6 percent more than June 2013, and up 1.5 percent compared to May 2014.

Dry Whey output in Wisconsin was recorded at 24.3 million pounds, which was up 4.9 percent from last year, but 7.1 percent lower from last month.
