Crops & Soils Research Featured at Agronomy/Soils Field Day

Four field tours will highlight this year's Agronomy and Soils Field Day on August 29 at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison College of Agriculture and Life Science's Arlington Agricultural Research Station. The cropping systems
tour will look at Roundup Ready cropping systems, understanding the RR alfalfa controversy, risk management in RR
corn, and the possibility of RR alfalfa and weed management over eight years in RR corn and soybean.
The corn and soybeans production for profit tour will highlight returns on seed treatments in corn and soybean systems,
soybean variety selection in the biofuel era, foliar fungicides as a profitable proposition and sustaining high corn yields in shorter
rotations. The soils tour will look at the effect of rotating tillage on soil properties and yield, effect of soil drying on soil test,
comparison of manure and fertilizer phosphorus for corn growth and evaluation of corn nitrogen management at Pioneer Farm.
The corn and soybean biofuels tour, in the afternoon only, will look at the present state and outlook of biodiesel in Wisconsin,
sustainable production certification of biofuels and solid and water conservation implications of corn ethanol.
Bruce Jones, UW-Madison/Extension professor of agricultural and applied economics, will deliver the luncheon speech,
"Where Are We Headed with the New Farm Bill."
Specialists from the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and UW-Extension will staff the tour stops. Tours will leave the
Public Events Facility at 8:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and 1 p.m. In the event of rain, presentations will be made inside. Lunch and
refreshments will be available at the event.
