Wisconsin Farmers Projected to Harvest Record Soybean Acreage

It's going to be a huge year for soybeans this fall in Wisconsin. According to the USDA's latest crop production summary, farmers in the Badger State are expected to harvest about 115 million bushels of beans, up 13.9 million from last year, with a projected yield of 50 bushels per acre. Soybean planted acreage is also estimated at 2.30 million acres with 2.29 million acres to be harvested. If realized, this will set a new record for harvested acres.

The report further noted that corn production in Wisconsin is forecast at 531 million bushels--which would be the second largest corn production on record behind the 573 million bushels harvest realized two years ago. Based on conditions as of August 1, yields are expected to average 177 bushels per acre, an increase of three bushels per acre from last year. An estimated three million acres will be harvested for grain in 2018.

Winter wheat production is forecast at 14.1 million bushels, up 2.52 million bushels from 2017. Yields are expected to average 64 bushels per acre, down four bushels from both the July forecast and last year. An estimated 220,000 acres will be harvested for grain.

Oat production is forecast at 6.50 million bushels, up 1.49 million bushels from the year before. Yields are forecast at 65.0 bushels per acre, down 12 bushels from July, but up six bushels from 2017. An estimated 100,000 acres will be harvested for grain.

And in the hay fields, Wisconsin farmers are expecting to harvest 3.20 tons per acre, with a total production of 2.91 million tons. That's 332,000 tons higher than last year. The forecasted yield for other hay is 1.50 tons per acre, with a production reaching 585,000 tons.
