Wisconsin Egg Production Up in Late 2014

Wisconsin egg producers say their hens laid 134 million eggs in December 2014, up 6 percent from last month, but down two percent from last year. According to the latest Chickens and Eggs release from USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, the total number of layers on hand during December was 5.47 million, up three percent from last month, and up two percent from a year ago. Eggs per 100 layers for the month of December were 2,448--up two percent from last month, but down four percent from last year.

Nationally, egg production totaled 8.63 billion during December 2014, up three percent from last year. Production included 7.54 billion table eggs, and 1.09 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.02 billion were broilertype and 75 million were egg-type. The total number of layers during December 2014 averaged 362 million, up 2 percent from last year. December egg production per 100 layers was 2,384 eggs, up 1 percent from December 2013.

All layers in the U.S. on January 1, 2015 totaled 361 million, up one percent from last year. The 361 million layers consisted of 305 million layers producing table or market type eggs, 53.2 million layers producing broiler-type hatching eggs, and 3.20 million layers producing egg-type hatching eggs.
