WFU Members to Take Part in NFU's Virtual Fly-in
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 09/15/2020

Hundreds of farmers and rural allies are gathering online this week to speak with elected representatives and administration officials as part of National Farmers Union's fall legislative fly-in. Thirty-five Wisconsin Farmers Union members will be among those participating in virtual meetings.

Organizers say advocates from across the country will campaign for policies that support pandemic recovery, reduce chronic overproduction, restore competition to agricultural markets, strengthen rural healthcare, improve access to broadband Internet, ensure the success of the U.S. Postal Service, help farmers and ranchers implement climate-smart practices, and expand the market for homegrown biofuels.

"It's always incredible to join with hundreds of other farmers in Washington, D.C. each fall, so we'll definitely miss that spirit of camaraderie and feeling of unity," said WFU President Darin Von Ruden. "But thanks to modern technology, we'll still be able to lift up the voices of family farmers and our grassroots policy."

The week-long event began on Monday with remarks from U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue and Deputy Under Secretary for Rural Development Bette Brand. Other speakers during the week include House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Ag Committee Chairman Collin Peterson, and other leaders. Participants will also join small-group meetings with congressional offices, a panel discussion on the U.S. Postal Service and a virtual social gathering.
