Sen. Johnson Not Taking Stand on TPP Trade Deal
Wisconsin Ag Connection - 08/24/2016

U.S. Senator Ron Johnson says he is not yet ready to take sides on the debate over the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement. The GOP incumbent told reporters this week that the trade deal, negotiated by President Obama earlier this year, could impact American manufacturing and other sectors and that he's still weighing the pros and cons of the exact language in the bill.

Johnson says he is studying the deal 'section by section' and will likely decide how he will vote on the plan at the last minute.

Former Sen. Russ Feingold, who's challenging Johnson in November to get his old seat back, said TPP would kill American jobs because it encourages manufacturers to hire workers overseas.

Wisconsin Congressman Ron Kind recently went on record supporting the TPP. He feels the Pacific Rim area is the largest and fastest growing economic region in the world, but he wants to make sure trades are happening based on American rules, values and standards, in an effort to stay competitive in the global economy.

Many state and national farm groups support TPP, saying the trade agreement will bring new market access for U.S. farmers in the Asia-Pacific region by lowering burdensome tariffs which hurt U.S. competitiveness, boosting exports to regions of the world with growing middle classes, and establishing high-standard trade rules.
